Student Dress and Costume Guidelines
Bellevue School District’s Student Dress Policy 3224 applies during all socials and spirit days, with the goal of promoting an inclusive learning environment. School Staff will regulate student dress when:
A health or safety hazard is presented
Damage to school property will result from the student’s dress, and/or
A material and substantial disruption of the educational process will result from the student’s dress or appearance (may exist when a student’s conduct is inconsistent with any part of the educational mission/learning of the district).
This means:
- No masks or decorations that cover the face
- No weapons or look-alike weapons
- No gore or costumes that depict violence or violent characters
- Content of the costume needs to be appropriate for school
- No oversized costumes that create a hazard walking in the halls
- No costumes that promote the use of illegal substances or activities
- No costumes that are derogatory or disrespectful
- No costumes that mock/mimic another culture or race
If students are unsure whether their costume is permitted at school, they are encouraged to ASK a staff member in ADVANCE. Thanks in advance for your understanding, and support of a positive school climate and culture.
Book eFair
I’m excited to announce that our school is hosting a Follett Book eFair, Kodiak Super Reads Book eFair! From November 1st – 30th, you can shop online for your home library while supporting Chinook’s library. Your student will receive a flyer by end of this week; ask them for it!
To browse titles and purchase books, visit book-efairs.follettcontent.com and enter our Book eFair Code in the box on the left side: M54LZ
Here are the details:
- A Follett Book eFair is an online only book fair. Our goal is to total sales of $1,500 and above.
- After you browse and shop online, the books ship to our school for free when the online book fair ends. It’s so easy! Books purchased should arrive well before Winter Break.
- For every dollar our Book eFair earns, our school receives 20% back as a credit. We can use this credit to purchase books and resources to enhance our school library.
- Students can create a Wish List to share with family and friends. This is a great way to ensure they get the books they want!
- You’ll find a wide range of titles at affordable prices, from new releases to popular fiction and nonfiction. Be sure to also check out the Mega Sale section!
- Anyone can support our Book eFair. Share staff and student Wish Lists with your family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. They can also purchase Follett Book eFair eGift Cards to gift to your student(s), donate to the school, or support students who might not otherwise be able to purchase new books.
Please let me know if you have any questions. We’re very excited about this opportunity. Thank you in advance for supporting the students and staff at Chinook Middle School.
Sincerely,
Ms. Kawaguchi
Library Specialist
P.S. All sales benefit our school, so please help us spread the word! If you or a local business would like to support our online book fair through a donation or purchase of an eGift card.
Shine On Chinook
We are in week three of our SHINE ON CHINOOK fundraiser and are so grateful to all our donors. We still have a ways in reaching our goal but the amount of support shown so far is remarkable. These funds go back to our students and our teachers. With every dollar raised, we can support field trips, scholarships, teacher grants, movie nights, the Orange and Black Social, classroom resources, lecturers, I-Connect, the LIBRARY and so much more. Please support our campaign and donate today! Thank you to our generous donors for their contributions!
REFLECTIONS
"Accepting Imperfection"
Due November 20th
Our Reflections program is currently accepting submissions. This is a national program, and we strongly encourage our students to participate. Reflections is a wonderful avenue for our creative kids to express themselves through dance, photography, digital art, creative writing and more. Not only is it rewarding in its own right, but also a chance to build up their portfolio and achievements for those wishing to pursue the arts after high school. This is a low risk but high reward opportunity and it would be so exciting to have your student's work showcased!! Please contact Chelsea at Reflections@chinookptsa.org.
How to Know When you Are Too Sick for School
As we enter the time of year when colds and fevers tend to appear unexpectedly, the Bellevue School District wants to remind families of some important guidelines regarding when students should stay home from school. Students experiencing certain illnesses may be required to stay home to rest and recover.
The Bellevue School District's nurses and attendance team have provided helpful guidance on which symptoms indicate a student should remain at home and when they may safely return to school. Keeping sick students at home, along with encouraging regular handwashing, helps protect everyone—especially those with fragile immune systems or acute medical conditions. Learn more on the Too Sick for School webpage.
In Case You Missed It
Socktober
Socktober is a school wide challenge put on by Chinook's chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), to help support the non-profit Seattle Nightwatch and their annual sock drive: Sock it to Homelessness. Our goal is to collect 3000 pairs of men's athletic socks by the end of the month. As a bonus for the students, we award prizes to our 1st 2nd and 3rd place classes. Students will compete with their 6th period classes and can bring in socks any day of the week to try and get closer to winning their classes these prizes. Socks that are recommended are Men’s Athletic Socks, so please try to refrain from bringing any others. We hope to see most of our students participate in this challenge for fun and to help support those in need!

Shine On Chinook
Our Shine on Chinook campaign is off to a great start! Our PTSA appreciates those who have already participated, and we know that the next few weeks will bring us so much closer to our goal of $52,000. If you haven't had a chance to return your envelope, please do. For more information on how you can support our fundraiser, please visit our website. The support we've received so far will go a long way in supporting our programs, events, scholarships and grants!
Thank you!!!
Reflections Program
The PTSA's National Reflections Program is ready for submissions! Is your student creative? Do they have an interest in the arts? Are they passionate in singing or performing? Drawing, writing, digital arts, photography? The Reflections program is a low-risk way to engage your student's creativity, build a portfolio, and showcase their talent by submitting a piece to our local Chinook competition.
